I Grew Seminole Pumpkin. Now What?

Mary Smith |

Welcome to my "now what?" series. This is part of my Food Storage Prepping in the Garden collection to help you better understand what you are growing and how to use your harvest.

This Seminole pumpkin was harvested late October 2021. I Stored in a cool, dry spot. A year later, I cut open the last one and it was not only edible but delicious.

Tastes amazing! I'm saving more seeds. This is hands down the winner. No wonder it is a Native American staple

From seeds, Seminole Pumpkins mature in 95 to120 days. The shapes and sizes can vary. Some look like a traditional pumpkin, others can resemble a gourd "tear drop" shape, and other shapes resembling a butternut squash.

Seminole Pumpkin plants can climb up trees, fences and trellis. If grown on the ground, Seminole Pumpkin plants can easily grow 25 feet long. Seminole Pumpkins are naturally adapted to HOT, humid climates but require plenty of water. If you are growing in an arid climate, you will need to water regularly.

Once the Seminole pumpkins are mostly orange in color, they are ready to harvest. If stored in a cool, well-ventilated area, the pumpkins can last anywhere between six to twelve months with no effect on the taste or quality.

HOW TO CURE SEMINOLE PUMPKINS

Harvest Seminole pumpkins with a good size stem left attached to the fruit. Allow Seminole Pumpkins to cure in a warm, dry spot for 7-10 days. This will help to harden the skin and possibly last longer in storage.

PROPER STORAGE FOR PUMPKINS

Store uncarved pumpkins in a cool, dry, and dark area with good air circulation. Place them in a single layer on cardboard or a wooden board so they don’t touch. A safe enough spot for them is in a lower cabinet indoors if you don't have a basement.

My favorite way to eat Seminole Pumpkin is roasted with soil, pepper, rosemary and garlic.

These delicious pumpkins can also be used in soups, in pies and even pumpkin bread!
