This old Italian variety that dates back to the early 1900s. The name means 'winter grapes' in Italian. The direct translation is "bunches of winter tomatoes".
Grappoli d'Inverno tomato plants produce clusters of 8-12 grape tomatoes that can be clipped and hung at room temperature for fall and winter snacking. As the moisture content drops, the flavor gets sweeter and tarter and eventually you have something akin to sun dried tomatoes.
Ramallet tomatoes (as they are called in Spain), also known as winter tomatoes and piennolo tomatoes (in Italy), refers to a class of Mediterranean heirloom tomatoes that grow in clusters or tresses. Fruit tresses are strung up at the end of the season and stored at room temperature for fresh eating, ripe and unripe fruit alike.
